Abstract

The utilization of pediatric cardiac CT in congenital heart disease has increased due to improved spatial and temporal resolution, increased diagnostic accuracy, and advanced cardiac imaging technologies. However, optimization techniques to reduce the CT radiation dose while maintaining anatomical delineation, diagnostic confidence, and overall imaging quality are necessary for clinical practice, particularly in children. We previously published a study of the radiation dose levels and influencing factors in pediatric cardiac CT. For this article, we reviewed recent updates in publications on radiation dose optimization for pediatric cardiac CT during the previous five years. In this review, we describe CT radiation dose metrics, recently published diagnostic reference levels of pediatric chest and cardiac CT, and recent updates in patient-related, scan technique-related, and image reconstruction-related radiation dose optimization techniques for pediatric cardiac CT. These data are valuable information on which to build a database for a new edition of Asian Consortium on Radiation Dose of Pediatric Cardiac CT (ASCI-REDCARD) standards.
